Controlling Burrs in High Speed Stamping
February 05, 2026
For electrical components, burrs are not just ugly—they can cause short circuits. At Atharva Engineers, we follow a strict protocol for burr control.
The 10% Rule
Generally, the maximum allowable burr height should not exceed 10% of the material thickness. For a 0.5mm brass terminal, the burr must be under 0.05mm.
Correct Cutting Clearance
The most common cause of excessive burrs is incorrect clearance between the punch and the die. If the clearance is too tight, the secondary shear creates a burr. If too loose, the material tears.
Tool Maintenance Schedule
We regrind our cutting elements after every 50,000 strokes for high-precision jobs, ensuring the cutting edge remains razor sharp.
